The Dark Ages of Online Sheet Music: What You Can Do About It by Vanessa
Let’s say you’re a musician. Maybe you play the piano. Like most people, you probably have internet access of some kind. Sure, it’s wonderful for sending messages to friends, watching animals do stupid crap on YouTube, and downloading anything that’s out there.
But what about getting onto the internet in a more specific way? Doctors get medical updates. Researchers have the world at their fingertips. Scientists collaborate online constantly. So why should you, an excellent pianist, not get access to the same quality stuff that the rest of them can?
A Niche Market
Because sheet music is quite a niche market, and only important to a small number of people, its representation online has lagged significantly behind.
It’s way behind the times. Just as we’re downloading music to our iPods, why should sheet music be left out? Shouldn’t there at least be a dependable destination online for digital piano music we can trust?
Talk About Arbitrary Standards…
If you thought music DRM was backwards, you should see some of the sites selling sheet music.
Some require you to have a flawless printer, because you will only have one chance to print your music after buying. If something messes up, tough luck.
Other sites giving classical music have insanely inconsistent standards when we look at their files. Sometimes you’ll get a PDF, other occasions a set of GIFs that don’t print properly, and sometimes you’ll be dumped with a proprietary file that’s generally useless.
Why Forums are Important
The only reliable way to make sure the digital sheet music you’re paying for is reliable is through the claims of other users. If other people are using the PDFs, and insisting they are OK, you can buy with assurance.
One of the top digital piano music sellers, PianoStreet.com, has also put into place a huge set of message boards around its music. Actually, the site came from a pre-existing forum, called pianoforum.net, so the sale of digital piano music was something that came naturally, not a straight-up business from the moment of conception.
Why Mp3s Are Important For Sheet Music
Who cares about piano transcriptions if you can’t hear what they should resemble when you play them? Sure, your piano teacher may have the chops to play it for you, but if you’re in this alone, you’ll need to seek out a real recording to hear how it should sound.
A real digital sheet music company should provide tons of mp3 downloads of whatever they’re selling, adding reams of value to the actual transcriptions. Sites like PianoStreet.com have hundreds of their most typical easy/intermediate bits online as downloadable mp3 files, the same ones that any new pianist is happy to learn.
Pay Once, Download Forever
Even though content producers won’t budge much, many have come to the realization that the way of the future lies in subscription models, where you will pony up some flat fee and have access to unlimited downloads.
Pages such as PianoStreet.com have adopted this for their business approach, giving monthly memberships that allow users unlimited access to consistently excellent sheet music.
The Good Guys
And so it isn’t just a mess online. A tiny but influential group of sites, led by PianoStreet.com’s efforts, are modifying the way digital piano music will be sold in the future. Don’t worry about the rest and patronize the best!
